Hong Kong China Rowing Association

Organized by the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (HKCRA), co-organized by the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation (HKSSF) and subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Schools Rowing Championships 2017 was concluded successfully on 18 and 19 November at Sha Tin Shing Mun River.  This Championships had a record breaking number from over 90 schools and more than 400 entries of students to take part.  The Hong Kong Junior Rowing Squad members, schools under “Sports Legacy Programme” and Shenzhen Vanke Meisha Academy form mainland, China also compete in the Championships to increase the competiveness. This year, we have primary schools to take part aged under 13 events and the Boys’ and Girls’ champions went to CHAN Wang Hei (Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School) and Leah GILLETTE (Hong Kong International School) respectively.

The highlights of the Championships were on the Girls’ Single Sculls Event (Aged 16 and under) and Girls’ Single Sculls Event (Aged 19 and under).  The Silver Medalist CHENG Cheuk Kwan in the Asian Junior Championships and Hong Kong Junior Squad Member TSAI Ching Yi competed in this event and finally TSAI Ching Yi captured the champion title.  Another intense event was the Girls’ Single Sculls Event (Aged 19 and under) that three Hong Kong Junior Rowing Squad members including LEUNG Wing Wun (TWGHs Lui Yun Choy Memorial College); CHEUNG Hoi Lam (SKH Bishop Mok Sau Tseng Secondary School) were competed with CHOI Ying Lee from POH 80th Anniversary Tang Ying Hei College.  Eventually, LEUNG Wing Wun took the Gold Medal with the result 4m 09.24s.

After the two days competitions, the Hong Kong International School and Jockey Club Ti-I College won the Boys’ and Girls’ Overall Champion separately. The results of Boys and Girls events are summarized as follows:-

The Schools Rowing Championships is an unique on water rowing competition for local schools rowing teams in Hong Kong. It provides a platform for the young rowers to compete with each other and at the same time to corporate with the team members enhancing team spirit and sportsmanship. Through this annually opportunity, the HKCRA encourages all the schools to establish its own rowing team for promoting the sport of rowing in Hong Kong.  The HKCRA will also trying it’s hard to get the water rowing into the official event in the HKSSF in the coming year.
