4th Hong Kong Coastal Rowing Championships Enjoy the Fun in the sea!

Surrounded by the sea, Hongkongers have been enjoying the fun in the sea with various forms of water sports activities. Coastal Rowing is a safe and fast developing water sport which brings Hongkonger an alternative way to experience the fun of the sea around Hong Kong.

On 24 September, the 4th Hong Kong Coastal Rowing Championships was held in Middle Island at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s (RHKYC) premises. The Championships, consisting of Junior and Open categories and a total of seven events, attracted 15 local and one overseas rowing club ( Tyrian Club, UK ) to participate. The 126 participants competed on a 4.5km racing course around Middle Island, which seats between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay. With rains in the early morning and strong winds all the day, the weather was not perfect for the Championships but added challenges and fun to all coastal rowers who live with the spirit of conquering the tough sea conditions. The highlight of the day was the Men’s Open Coxed Quadruple Four where the winning team was formed by a composite crew of RHKYC and Tyrian club. Half of the crew will race in the World Rowing Coastal Championships 2017 in mid of October representing Hong Kong. They have demonstrated to other 12 teams the fashionable way to conquer the wave and over 20 knots wind by finishing the 4.5km race in 20 minutes 39.1 seconds, almost 1 minute 30 seconds faster than the 2nd place from RHKYC.

The Championships concluded with a medal presentation at the late evening with sun shining over a lot of smiling faces.

The 4th Hong Kong Coastal Rowing Championship was organized by Hong Kong, China Rowing Association, co-organized by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and subvented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department.
