Ukraine and Spain Become the Big Winners

Hong Kong Wins a Gold in Women’s Quadruple and a Bronze in Women’s Double

 (Hong Kong, 3 Nov 2019) The 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships presented by Dah Sing Bank (WRCC) drew to a close after the three-day race at the Victoria Harbour, with Team Ukraine and Spain as the outright winners. Ukarine picked two golds in coastal women’s solo and coastal mixed double sculls, while Spain won two golds in coastal men’s double sculls and coastal men’s solo, while host Hong Kong Team clinched a gold in coastal women’s coxed quadruple sculls and a bronze medal in coastal women’s double sculls.

On the final day of the WRCC, Hong Kong advanced to Finals A in five events. Hong Kong’s coastal women’s quadruple sculls team Wong Sheung Yee, Leung King Wan, Leung Wing Wun, Hung Wing Yan Winnie and Tse Yan Man beat Russia and Denmark to clinch the gold medals. Lee Ka Man and Lee Yuen Yin ranked the third place in coastal women’s double sculls.

Hong Kong team member Tse Yan Man admitted winning the gold medal in coastal women’s coxed quadruple sculls were truly surprising, “We climbed to the second place at the turning point, but we were then notified that we won the first, it was definitely an unexpected result to us,” Tse Yan Man said. This Hong Kong team’s average age is younger than 22. As for Lee Ka Man and Lee Yuen Yin, the siblings came in third in the coastal women’s double sculls, and the duo were satisfactory about their performance today. “We made some mistakes in the qualifying heats, after reviewing our performances, we managed to perform more consistently in the finals,” said Lee Yuen Yin. The Lee’s siblings also thanked for the support of the home fans, who gave them extra motivation during the race.  

Team Ukraine shares the same glory with Spain at this Championships, winning two golds. Diana Dymenchenko successfully defended her world champions title in coastal women’s solo, while Diana Dymenchenko and Yuriy Ivanov secured the first place at the coastal mixed double sculls. Team Spain also collects two golds at coastal men’s double sculls and coastal men’s solo.

he theme of the WRCC 2019 is “Let’s Row ‘n’ Rock”, the Organising Committee has organised the “World Champ Festival” at Central Harbourfront Event Space, where the Medals Presentation Ceremony was held at night, local band sp’ACE will perform at the closing ceremony, pushing the atmosphere to a high note as the Championships draws to an end.

The 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships presented by Dah Sing Bank is recognised as an “M” Mark event, and that helps promote Hong Kong’s image as Asia’s sports hub. The “M” Mark awarded by the Major Sports Events Committee, symbolising intense, spectacular and signature event in the territory sports calendar.
