Chiu Hin Chun did it again! Hong Kong, China Rowing Team Celebrates Historic Gold Medal Win at the World Rowing Cup II (24 – 26 May 2024)

The Hong Kong, China Rowing Association is thrilled to announce the historic achievement of Chiu Hin Chun, who secured the Gold Medal in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls event at the World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland. Chun finished the race with a time of 7:03.24, leading the 6 rowers in the final from start to finish. This victory marks the first World Cup gold medal in Hong Kong rowing history and is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the rowing team.

President of the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association, Mike Tanner, BBS, MH, expressed immense pride and excitement for Chiu’s outstanding performance. “This is a major achievement for Chiu personally and a brilliant result for the international success of Hong Kong Rowing” said the President.

“Following Chiu’s bronze medal win in the Open Weight Single Sculls event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, he has now further demonstrated his international potential with this gold medal. His success is the result of rigorous training and unwavering commitment, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the entire Hong Kong, China Rowing Team for their continuous efforts to represent Hong Kong with excellence.” Tanner added.

Kenny Wu, Head Rowing Coach at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, added, “In the past two months, good news has continued to come from rowing. Not only did we win this World Cup gold medal, but at the end of April, we also won the Best Team Athlete Sports Stars Award. Our rowers were also selected for Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia list. These honors will undoubtedly usher in a new chapter for the development of rowing in Hong Kong.”

Coach Wu acknowledged the support from the Hong Kong Sports Institute and the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association, thanking the entire coaching and support staff for their hard work and dedication. He added, “Facing the upcoming Olympic Games, World Championships, and other major competitions, the Rowing Team will continue to work hard and strive to bring more excellent results and medals to Hong Kong, China. Together, we will make history!”

Chiu Hin Chun’s qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games is another milestone in his rowing career. Although the Olympic Single Sculls event poses a significant challenge due to it being in the open weight category, Chiu’s recent achievements provide a timely boost in his preparation for the Games. This will be the second time Chun has qualified for the Olympics following on from the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
