(Hong Kong, 5 August 2020) Hong Kong Rowing Team athlete CHAN Chi Fung, Thomas (22) set a new world record in Concept 2 Indoor Rower with Slides Lightweight Men 19-29 4 minutes with 1,321m, surpassed Italian rower Gabriel Soares’s 1,287m.
Thomas broke the record of 30 minutes of the same category with 8,772m on 30 July. One week after (5 August), he decided to challenge a shorter distance of 4 minutes, “Last time I was practicing with a mentality of practice. With the encouragement of the coach, I set a new record unexpectedly. This time I participated in the challenge in a planned way and everything was up to my own judgment; The 30 minutes challenge emphasizes endurance and willpower, while the 4-minute challenge requires explosive power and reaction in addition to endurance”, said Thomas. The new world record was recognized by Concept 2 on 13 August, and Thomas once again wrote his name in the Indoor Rower World Record book.

Self-recognition and Back to training
Regarding to his success of breaking back-to-back world record, Thomas believes that this proved he is not incapable of his ability, but the road to learning is still far away. As for the next goal? He said, “The current plan is to refocus on water training, because it was previously affected by the epidemic and they were not allowed to practice in the water, and normal water training has just resumed last week.”
Although most of the events have been cancelled due to the impact of the epidemic, Thomas’s attitude of constantly striving for breakthroughs and the spirit of keeping faith are really worthy of praise.
